The lake is a very important site for waterbirds.
In late autumn and into the winter, birds come in from Europe, spend the winter months on the lake and depart in springtime.
Loughrea Lake is internationally important for Shoveler and is nationally important for Tufted Duck and Coot.
The Lake is of regional/local importance for other species of waterfowl namely Cormorant, Heron, Goldeneye, Grebe, Pochard, Teal and Wigeon.
Along the shoreline and more easily seen by the public are Mute Swan, Mallard and Coot.
