Loughrea Lake Amenities
Loughrea Lake has many users. The fishing rights are held by Loughrea Anglers Association and they regularly stock the lake with brown trout and organise fishing competitions on most Sundays through the fishing season.
The Long Point is the site of a Blue Flag beach which is very popular for swimmers and is watched over by a lifeguard during the summer months. The recent rise in popularity of triathlons has seen the holding of an annual competition part of which is a 750m swim at the Long Point. A Christmas “swim” in aid of charity is also a recent highlight at the Long Point.
In recent years an Easter Sunday Mass has been celebrated at sunrise at the Long Point.
Kayaking and canoeing have increased in popularity and are carried out year round.
Dinghy sailing has been carried out on the Lake since the 1960s. Loughrea sailing club hosted Provincial Championships in the 1970s and 1980s. Dinghies can be seen sailing the lake in the summer and autumn months.
Corry’s Field, a public park of approximately 14.5 acres is a valuable resource to the town. The pathways that run through the park are used by strollers in all kinds of weather and the benches allow one to sit and while away the time looking out over the beautiful lake.
